A postcard from the Otways…..

We’ve been longing for some time away in our Little Home on Wheels.  The simplicity, togetherness and ease that comes with holidaying in a caravan.  Down the Great Ocean Road, where the bush meets the sea, we return.  He and I feel like we’ve come home when we are here, immersed in this breathtaking part of the world.  We drive high up into the hills where the mist wraps itself around us and take some time to wander.  We feel almost fairy like as we stand underneath tree ferns as tall as trees.  By the beach the girls play, the best kind of play, unstructured, at ease with nature and the beauty around them.  Our camping neighbours and their happy combi tent make us smile.  We watch the children make friendships quickly, they fish the river, taunt waves on the beach, build water moats and explore the world around them.

Slow days blend themselves into one another.  We bunker down in the van at night, cosy, together, happy.

Sharing some of my pictures via Instagram.  Can you tell I’m a teeny bit obsessed with it?

While we were away some exciting news appeared in my inbox.  We are so thrilled to see 1000 homes of happiness included in the top 25 Kidspot Village Voices Personal and Parenting blogs for 2013.  Happy days. xox

They tumbled out of bed just as the sun started to rise.  I love that excitement where they can barely contain themselves, jumping up and down on the spot giddy with birthday joy.  We all snuggle back in bed for a big birthday cuddle and I’m gently reminded of that day seven years ago when I could cradle the two of them in my arms together.  My teeny tiny three-pound babes.

We greet the morning sunshine and head outdoors eager to begin preparations for a twinnie vintage tea-party.  Little hands carefully carry tea cups and saucers outside and set them on the table, cakes bake in the oven, Dadda hangs pom poms, while I mix a bundle of fruit punch in my Nan’s old punch bowl.  The table, a mish mash of old wares and op-shop treasures, begins to come together.

Girls and boys sip punch in tea cups, play croquet on the lawn and decorate paper tea hats with feathers and sparkles.  Poppy and Ava spend the entire day smiling those big happy grins we adore so much.  I’m especially thankful for this camera of mine that sometimes captures the moment exactly in the way that I feel it.  My favourite picture is the one of them together sharing all of this joy while cutting their birthday cake.  A moment treasured.

Collapsing on the couch later that evening with my girls, Ava looks up at me and declares this ‘the best day in her whole entire life’.

Seven.  They turn Seven tomorrow.   Both just as kind and caring as ever.  In the morning we welcome friends and family to their outdoor vintage tea room we’ve been busy creating.   The excitement in this happy home…. electric.

So much to smile about with these long-awaited little ladies in my life.

Happy Birthday my sweets.

Upcycle

Slowly our vegetable patch grows.  We’ve started to add raised pallet boxes to our expanding crop and take great delight in upcycling these old pieces of timber.  The man of mine now has this new sixth sense for finding old discarded pallets and re-imagining waste.  He brings them home, pulls them apart and tinkers with the girls to convert each box ready for planting.  Eager little helpers shovel soil and stomp down manure.  We’ve now pulled out the remains of summers crop and prepare to plant for a new season.

Autumn {finally} shows itself  this weekend and for the first time in a while I take delight in the cool, wrap myself in my favourite old cardigan and snuggle on the couch.

Looking for some pop up patch inspiration? I’ve got a new obsession with The little Veggie Patch co.   Happy Weekend.

Are you a fan of the upcycle?

Hum

I’ve been a bit neglectful of this space for the past few weeks. Truth is, we’ve been settling into a new hum in this little home.  I’m working some more which in turn means the rhythm of home shifts somewhat.  It also means I am honestly sick to death of my computer by nightfall and with the end of summer I’m desperate to spend every last warm evening outside with my family.

So, when I haven’t been madly tapping away on my computer, I have been in the garden, in the kitchen, ploughing through three lots of readers and numeracy tasks of an evening with my Poppets, or sitting on the deck with a cup of tea and my thoughts.  Life is a contented busy at the moment and happiness is found in the simplest and slowest of tasks.

The garden is our favourite place to be right now, soaking up the delights it continues to provide us with.  We planted only two tomato plants this year and have been swamped with them. Blossy and I have been collecting baskets full while the stove hums away with relish and roasted vegetables ready to preserve.  We are eating tomatoes on absolutely everything!  We’ve also discovered the joy in trading food and continue to share the over abundance with family and friends.

I’m happy to say this little shift in our home, where busy and slow run alongside each other, has had me smiling a whole lot.

The last of the warm days, I hope you are enjoying them.

Tomatoes, care to share a cooking suggestion?
